Harbortown Dock
Harbortown Marina
Saturday May 6th finds us hot in Ft Pierce Harbortown
Marina. We spent the morning cleaning topsides and below
as we have just completed two days at sea and are all a bit
crusty. We took on water and had a quick lunch in the great
little restaurant here overlooking the harbor. 1:30 pm and
we head off the dock with no errors.
Island along the way
We are headed back to Vero Beach, one of our favorite
spots. It was an uneventful passage along what are now
familiar shores. A strand of small islands are occupied by
campers, picnickers and fisherman. It is very hot
throughout the day but we arrive at our destination by
3:00pm with enough breeze to keep us cool. We relax a bit
then head to the Riverside Café for sundowners, music,
local new friends and a spectacular sunset.

House on Indian River
Sunday and we have early morning reveille. A quick dog
walk, haul up the dinghy and off the hook at 7:30 am. There
is no wind, not even a whisper this morning. The morning is
cooler so we put the bimini back. Todays travels along the
river are governed by basically connecting the markers as
this is a narrow but well marked channel. We enjoy more
wildlife than we have seen in a while, osprey, dolphin, white
pelicans again. We had a wonderful chicken salad lunch with
mango and avocado, very cooling on another hot day. We
come into historic
Cocoa at 3:30 pm, hook up to shore
power and cool off in the air conditioning. How decadent!
We then walk around this charming village to see the lay of
the land and find a pub that likes dogs, The Dog and Bone.

Local Home in Cocoa
Monday morning we sleep in all the way to 7:00...what luxury. There is a
lot of smoke in the air from local brush fires and the morning fog has a
hard time lifting. We take the dog for a long walk along coastal road over
looking the Indian River which climbs high up on a bluff. Great view and
interesting neighborhood. We have a delightful breakfast and then
Richard has chores to attend to on the phone and internet so  Penny does
research for upcoming marinas and checks out navigational clues for our
next few days. Penny takes the bus to Cocoa Beach to the closest Publix,
putting that backpack to work. A man must have sustenance and libations.
Penny gave Otis a much needed bath which he seemed to really enjoy. We
have been told about an outstanding hardware, the SF Travis Company,
which we visited in the afternoon. It goes on for ever and has an old
fashioned country feel to it with lots of friendly service. The place was
immaculate and had over 15,000 square feet of everything you might
ever need. Dinner aboard and a quiet evening.

Old Fashinoed Service at Travis Hardware
Tuesday morning we are really fogged in with smoke,
no visibility so we decide to stay another day in Cocoa.
We catch up on the newsletter, walk into town for
some lunch, take another bus trip to Home Depot and
then have a nap. Richard became very productive in the
afternoon and rewired some more of the engine room.
Great dinner on board as the dolphins played around
the harbor.

New Smyrna Beach
Man at Work
Wednesday May 10 and we are up to a sultry morning
and off the dock at 7:15 am. There is no wind but we
will be motoring to
New Smyrna Beach which neither
of us has visited before. We arrived at the dock of
the
Riverview Hotel with a very strong current and
narrow dock space.  A challenge but there was great
dock help. Of course, upon arrival you are always
compelled to check out the new surroundings. Otis and
Penny walked around what we found to be a very
charming and friendly community with mixed use
development and not overdone. Very few large
buildings, nice shops, restaurants, homes and offices
with trees and flowers every where. What a delight!
We walked to the beach and watched sunset surfers
perform. These guys with hang gliders to propel them
were awesome! We came back to the Hotel for a
lovely dinner as we watched the sunset over the Rose.

Dinner at Riverview
Thursday morning we are off the dock at 7:30 am for
7:40 bridge opening just north of us. We are headed to
Palm Coast, a new destination. The day is very overcast
with some sprinkles which is actually nice. The wind came
up and we motor sailed up the Halifax River past Daytona.
We come into dock at 2:00 pm after a quiet day motoring.
We walked once more to check out the neighborhood and
found the hot spot was the European Village, a new
development that was well conceived but had not quite
caught on. The area has very mixed housing transitioning
from the past with lots of upscale development going on.
We had Crab Cakes at Barbara Jeans, a franchise from
the Savannah area and then headed back to the Rose.
Richard indulged himself with a well deserved 2 hour nap.
Penny did laundry and we had a nice satisfying dinner
aboard.
