Newport, RI to Portland, ME July 2006

July 4th, 2006 and the Crew of the Viking Rose are reunited, thanks to many family members. Penny, Mom and Otis drove to Marblehead where we were joined by Ginger, Peter's wife, for the caravan to Newport. We met these two funny looking stinky sailors at the Black Pearl amongst 4th of July revelers, including Redcoats and the Statue of Liberty. Peter and Richard had done a fine job bringing the Rose north and we think they enjoyed the journey. We had a delightful lunch, dining and watching the huge crowd. Much fun! Soon after, we said our good byes to them and off they went to Marblehead. We headed back to the Rose, glad to return home. Richard went sound asleep immediately, needless to say. Dark came again and the sky started to light up all around. We were moored right off the New York Yacht Club so had a fabulous view of the fireworks. America knows how to throw a party. It was inspiring.

July 5 th we relaxed after moving to another mooring in the
morning and then went off to enjoy some of beautiful Newport.
We are in great company surrounded by classic wooden boats,
Gleam, Northern Lights, Mariner and Pam. However the day is
rainy and quiet so we roam the historic town, looking for our kind
of nook and cranny. We had a date night at Zelda's which was great
fun. A local, friendly, good food and wine type of place that we
gravitate towards and enjoy. Bravo to them!
July 6th and it is still raining. Funny, but last year we were here when
the Boat Show was flooded out, too. We spent the morning aboard
doing chores and then ventured out in the clearing skies. Flowers
abounded and the colors are so vibrant at this parallel. We did enjoy
our first clear sunset in a while and poked around and had another
great time in gracious Newport. Always a delight to see boats coming
and going.
Friday, July 7 and off we go now that the sky is clear. Otis
and Pen went to Ft Adams for the morning run and then a
quick return and off the mooring at 8:00am. Clear passage
to channel and sails up as we come around the head.
Beautiful! The wind is in our favor and we are headed up
Buzzards Bay to the village of Marion. The weather is cool
and so we roast a hen for dinner aboard as this is the first
time to crank up the oven since heading north. Herbs from
our travelling garden and it was great. The full moon rises
over the harbor to our delight. The weather is fresh again
and it was nice to be back on the water.
July 8 we have a good morning exploring the lovely village of
Marion. Very pretty, friendly family community. The gardens are
beautiful and the muffins were fresh. Otis had a game of ball with
dad...always loves a run! The General Store had all one might need.
We are headed through the Cape Cod Canal and need to catch the
tide so we are off the mooring at 11:00am. There was no wind so
we motored into the canal. We were joined by another sailboat,
Mad Hatter II for the transit. Bike paths were all along both
sides of canal with lot's of people waving. It was a beautiful clear
day and the canal was quite pretty. As we entered Cape Cod Bay
the winds were rising, we set the sails and headed to Provincetown
with 4 other sailboats. A beautiful sail. We reached our anchorage
at 7:30pm. It was sweatshirt weather but clear and sunny. Penny
and Otis took the launch in for some reconnaissance while the
captain showered and scotched, then returned the dog to Rose and
we went to town for a late dinner. This place rocks! A colorful,
diverse crowd with a large gay community supporting lot's of
galleries, restaurants and boutiques. Fun and lively to say the
least! Saturday night date at The Lobster Pot and then home to
crash after a long day.
Sunday morning Penny and Otis explore some
more of P'Town. Church bells were ringing and
the coffee shops busy. We then set sail at
9:30 for the Marblehead area to spend a few
days with brother Peter and Ginger. We set
sail but we did not have much wind until late in
the day. Peter snapped our picture under full
sail as we rounded Marblehead Neck. Thank
you! We moored at Salem Harbor then joined
them for showers and a wonderful dinner at
their home. Fun time had all around.
July 10 and we are waiting for our anchor delivery once more. We went to the Beesley's
and the brothers worked on our frozen whisker pole with success. Penny did laundry and
actually sat and read magazines. Otis and Raj, their black Lab, had a visit to the vet to
have their nails done and Ginger and Penny viewed their current photography show. Very
nice. We did a little re provisioning and the P. Beesley's joined the R. Beesley's for a fun
dinner aboard. The anchor arrived!
Tuesday morning we check the weather to see about departure for points north but there is a front coming in
and the day looks already daunting. A few chores aboard and then we go into Salem to be good tourists. We had
a great lunch at Brother's Deli but the rain came in fiercely and we were not prepared. Ran and ducked into a
bank, a church and finally a bar with torrential rain and golf ball size hail coming down with avengance. We sat at
Capt's watching the storm over the harbor, worrying about poor Otis alone aboard. The thunder and lightening
and wind were extreme. Finally there was a break after 2 hours and we returned, very wet, to a grateful hound.
We find items to indicate that the Rose had been seriously tossed about. Fruit had actually jumped out of the
basket and landed and rolled across the floor! If Otis could tell the story of what really happened! Needless to
say we did not leave him again.
July 12 the weather is not looking good once again. We spent
the morning aboard planning and charging the batteries and
then Peter picked us up at noonish. Otis went to doggie camp
with Peter and we headed to Marblehead. We had a great
lunch at Barnacles overlooking the rainy harbor, then ventured
around this historic village. Delightful. Peter picked us up and
we returned to their home to spend the evening as the rain
continued.
Thursday arrives cool and still cloudy. We think we have to stay here while Richard
takes a quick trip to Atlanta. Penny went to the Peabody-Essex Museum and saw two
great shows, the Yachting Photography of Willard B. Jackson and Painting Summer in
New England. Richard spent the morning puttering doing boat errands. We rejoined
and headed back to the Rose, contemplating his trip to Atlanta. ALAS! The weather
broke out clear and sunny at 6:00pm so we made a quick decision and exit of Salem
Harbor. We headed overnight to Portland, Maine, invigorated by being on the water
once more. We motor sailed all evening with 3 hour watches. The almost full moon
rose about 10:00pm to show us the way. It was very chilly so we had on sweats and
foul weather gear. Morning brought views of rock, lighthouses and lobster pots galore.
Our passage was quicker than expected and we arrived at 10:30am through this very
busy shipping and fishing harbor. Many marinas were full so we docked at a limited
facility at very rocky docks. We enjoy a shower and a 3 hour nap with air conditioning
then headed to town for dinner. J's Oyster Bar takes us in for wine and hors
d'oeuvres. Richards trip to Atlanta was cancelled due to scheduling complications and
we are finally in Maine!
